Bento Picnic Founder Leanne Valenti

Leanne Valenti, Chef Owner

I started Bento Picnic to make lunches for my family and friends — who were always busy & on-the-go. I wanted to make sure they had delicious, nourishing meals that would carry them through their day.

At the heart of Bento Picnic are principles of Washoku that I learned while living and studying in Japan:

  • Start with wholesome ingredients
  • Fill at least half your plate with seasonal, plant-based foods
  • Use 5 colors, 5 tastes and 5 elements in every meal, aiming to eat 30 different foods per day

With all this nutrient-dense variety every day, our bodies get replenished with a lot of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which means you can experience heightened energy and sustained immunity simply by enjoying our delicious, nourishing meals!

Alexis Chong Bento Picnic

Alexis Chong

5 Facts About Alexis:
Family is the biggest inspiration for me. We are always either prepping food or eating meals together. The heart of the home is in the kitchen and growing up I was always in there seeing what my mom or dad was cooking. My dad is a master of making brittle!
2️⃣My biggest influence has to be Julia Child. As a kid I loved catching her on PBS.
3️⃣Some of my favorite items on the menu are the cornbread muffins (so buttery and tasty!) and the garden bentos. Sometimes even I forget how good vegetables are!
4️⃣love cooking breakfast at home – any time of day!
5️⃣I was nominated as Best New Chef 2014 by Food & Wine magazine and was a featured chef at the 2014 Food & Wine Festival.

Amanda Koeppe

5 Facts About Amanda:
My earliest food memory is baking snickerdoodle cookies with my mom for Christmas. We would only make them once a year and I would always look forward to it.
2️⃣I worked an office job for three years and I felt like I was losing my creativity and getting caught in the repetition of day-to-day life. I had considered culinary school, but didn’t want to go the traditional route because I was a vegetarian at the time. That’s when I found Natural Epicurean. I got to focus on the holistic and healing aspects of food. I fell in love with the way I could help others feel healthy through cooking
3️⃣The best part of my job is the creative flexibility. We focus on local produce and are always trying to find new ways to make delicious and beautiful food.
4️⃣I’ve heard I make a pretty good coconut curry.
5️⃣Okra is hands down my favorite summer ingredient.

• Why People Love Bento Picnic •

Bento Picnic is healthy AND delicious!

“I won't act like I'm a health junkie, but when I have tried healthy foods it's usually been bland and unappetizing. This was not the case. Your flavor profiles were spot on! Seasoning on veggies was perfect. That cornbread...I could eat it by the pan. I think each had a great combo of flavors and textures...and color! Kudos on a well thought out bento."

– Julian C.

Everyone Loves Bento Picnic!

"This is the best catering experience I've ever had. And I've been in administration for seven years. The food is so fresh and delicious; I get high fives, hugs, cheers, gasps, people showing up early for meetings, and everything else awesome when I order from Bento Picnic."

– Whitney C., Twyla

• FAQs •

Bento (弁当) is Japanese for lunchbox!

Bentos are boxed lunches traditionally made in Japan that include a balanced variety of wholesome, delicious foods presented in a beautiful, appetizing way. We love bento cuisine because it engages all the senses, and it’s as delicious as it is nourishing.

Of course!

We love helping people keep commitments to their health with our array of dietary options including gluten-free, grain-free, vegan, vegetarian, nut-free and dairy-free. If you’d like to place an order with a special off-menu dietary request, please give us a call at 512-987-8767 to discuss the possibilities.

Great question!

Washoku (和食) is the governing philosophy of Japan’s amazing food culture. Washoku is where we learned that if we use five colors, five tastes, and five elements in every meal, the result is quite magical. Even the healthiest ingredients are incredibly enjoyable and strikingly satisfying when they are prepared as part of a complete symphony of flavor, texture and color. So when we say we follow Japanese menu design, we mean that we use a rich variety of colors, tastes and elements in every meal we make. The end result is that our foods are as nourishing as they are delicious.
